Plan your trip to Trinidad

Trinidad is not a typical Caribbean destination built around resort tourism. The island is known for its culture, music, food, and biodiversity rather than large beach resorts. Many visitors come for Carnival, birdwatching, hiking, or simply to experience everyday life in a place where several cultures have shaped the island over centuries.

Trinidad can be visited year-round, though weather and events can influence the experience.

January to May
Generally the driest months. These are good conditions for hiking and exploring the island.

Rain showers occur more frequently, but the landscape is greener and visitor numbers are lower.

Carnival season
Carnival usually takes place in February or early March. Hotels book out early and prices increase, so planning well ahead is important.

Getting to Trinidad

Most visitors arrive in Trinidad through Piarco International Airport, about a 30-minute drive from Port of Spain. The airport receives flights from North America, the wider Caribbean, and several international hubs.

By ferry

If you are combining Trinidad with Tobago, you can travel between the islands either by a short domestic flight or by ferry. The ferry arrives at the Port of Spain Ferry Terminal on the waterfront in downtown Port of Spain, within walking distance of parts of the city center.

After arriving at the airport, most travelers continue to their accommodation by taxi, hotel transfer, or rental car. Renting a car can be helpful if you plan to explore beyond Port of Spain, especially for trips into the Northern Range or to beaches along the north coast.

Getting Around Trinidad

Getting around Trinidad is fairly straightforward once you understand the different options. While Port of Spain itself is compact, many of the island’s beaches, hiking areas, and birding sites lie outside the city, so transportation becomes part of the travel planning.

Rental cars
Renting a car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you plan to explore the Northern Range, drive along the north coast, or visit smaller communities outside the capital. Roads connecting the main parts of the island are generally in good condition, though traffic around Port of Spain can be heavy during rush hours.

Taxis and private drivers
Taxis are widely used in Trinidad and are easy to arrange through hotels or restaurants. They are a convenient option for airport transfers, evenings in Port of Spain, or day trips if you prefer not to drive.

Ride-hailing services
App-based rides have become increasingly common in Trinidad. Services such as TT Rideshare allow visitors to request rides directly from their phone and can be a practical option for getting around Port of Spain and nearby areas.

Maxi taxis
Maxi taxis are shared minibuses that follow fixed routes across the island. They are an important part of local transportation and relatively inexpensive, though they can be less intuitive for first-time visitors unfamiliar with the routes.

Safety in Trinidad

Trinidad has faced rising concerns about crime in recent years, which is something visitors will often hear about when researching the island. In practice, however, most incidents are concentrated in specific local areas and rarely involve travelers.

Visitors typically spend their time in places such as Port of Spain, the Northern Range, and the north coast, where tourism activity is more common. Using the same awareness you would apply in any large city is usually enough: avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods after dark, keep valuables out of sight, and use taxis or ride-hailing services such as TT Rideshare when moving around at night.

Asking your hotel or local hosts for advice on where to go is always helpful, and most travelers find that getting around Trinidad is easier than they initially expect.
